Makaha, West Side - Oahu

Surfing Makaha Beach -

Makaha is the center of surfing on the West Side. A big beautiful sandy beach fronts a long, slopey right that peels for a good distance, you can usually find lots of people of all shapes, abilities, and boards surfing together here. Makaha is a great wave for a longboard, although shortboards and bodyboards are good too.

When the waves begin to get bigger than 6 feet, Makaha starts to break on the outside, and the famous "makaha bowl" starts to show. Some of the biggest waves ever have been ridden here, most notably Greg Noll's famous ride during the big swell of 1969.

Makaha is also famous for it's backwash. This backwash hits the waves along the inside and make the wave almost double in size when it hits, great for airs and wipeouts.

The Keaulana family is a big part of Makaha's legend, with Buffalo and Brian Keaulana being the best known and most respected figures on the beach. These guys are currently living legends of aloha and ocean safety.

John Severson: "In this crowded world the surfer can still seek and find the perfect day, the perfect wave, and be alone with the surf and his thoughts."
